G1HORSE

Why spend tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars to obtain what you hope will be top quality thoroughbred race horses without first obtaining the best information? Why go down a breeding path well-trodden without giving yourself options for discovering other trails to future G-1 winners on dirt and turf, male and female, and over all distances?

A Compendium of the detailed pedigrees of Group One/Grade One thoroughbred horses from around the world from the beginning of the G-1 era in 1971 to present time is now available. After several years of painstaking effort, we are offering a unique resource that presents an easy to see and understand format for the pedigrees of G-1 winners from the major thoroughbred racing nations of the Northern Hemisphere. Included are races that were discontinued and downgraded from G-1 to lower ranking.

We have also made substantial progress in charting and incorporating into the Compendium 21st Century G-1 winners from the most important races in Australia. Other thoroughbreds from the Southern Hemisphere who won races in the North or contributed to the pedigree of northern G-1 winners can also be found in the Compendium.

WHO SHOULD BE INTERESTED IN G-1 THOROUGHBRED PEDIGREES, 2024 EDITION

Serious-minded breeders, owners, and trainers determined to obtain a competitive advantage from pedigree information should consider making an investment in this product. Centered on sires such as Northern Dancer and Raise a Native but also less prodigious but still important contributors such as Forli and Damascus, Boldnesian and Never Bend, Halo and Graustark, these Sire Groups have been responsible for producing the bulk of G-1 winners in the late 20th and early 21st Century. Because the complete 2024 edition is best utilized in its entirety, we will not sell information piece-meal. Thoroughbred connections and enthusiasts should have the resources not only to purchase the product for a price approximate to the median cost of a thoroughbred but make effective use of the pedigree charts by spending what is necessary for new foals and yearlings and/or to bring brood mares to stallions.

HOW WE MADE THE COMPENDIUM

Horse by horse, race by race, we charted the actual pedigrees of Group One/Grade One winners from around the Northern Hemisphere for the entire Group One/Grade One period, beginning in 1971 in Europe, 1973 in the United States, and so forth. This methodology included G-1 races that were later downgraded to lesser ranking or even discontinued. There are nearly 250 G-1 races that were run in the major thoroughbred racing nations of the Northern Hemisphere in 2023. Over 100 have been downgraded or discontinued during the G-1 era.

As mentioned above, we use a cross-referencing system based on sires so that the other half of a breeding pair that appears on a pedigree chart page can be located through the Master Index. In this manner, the pedigree descent of a horse can be tracked back through multiple generations, potentially unlocking clues to the attributes that produce successful G-1 winners of a particular kind. Everyone knows the quality of major sires of recent and present time—the Curlins and Galileos, the Into Mischiefs and War Fronts. However, much like a newly discovered vein of gold in a hidden mine, other sire lines of lesser renown have yielded and are yielding high-quality thoroughbreds now achieving G-1 status.

If a cross reference is located in a sire group not yet extracted from the Compendium, and if you need that information, we can make it available at no additional expense. In 2024 and going forward, we will add more Sire Groups as warranted, especially as sire lines generating G-1 winners in Australia are built up.

QUALITY OF G-1 RACES

We began with the premise that all horses winning Group One/Grade One contests in the major thoroughbred racing nations of the Northern Hemisphere were worthy of inclusion in the Compendium. Although we do not pass judgment on the relative quality of G-1 races, because our mission is to narrow the focus to the elitist thoroughbreds, we are not planning to automatically incorporate results from every other country that claims G-1 status for races. Certainly, we are open to persuasion. For the time being we have a full plate with completing the 2024 edition, covering the current schedule of 2024 G-1 contests in the major Northern Hemisphere racing nations, and bringing into the Compendium the top thoroughbred winners of the 21st Century from Australia.

Selectivity is doubly important because in the near future we will extract key data to develop valuable analytics. The goal is to show customers where all the best pedigrees have come from around the world in the recent past and present for obtaining, say, a three year old filly running the mile distance on grass, or a juvenile male dirt sprinter, or a three and up thoroughbred of either gender winning multiple G-1s over longer distances.

ACCURACY OF INFORMATION

This project took years to accomplish and is ongoing for subsequent winners, place, and show in G-1 races around the world.  Although in assembling and organizing so much information human error is possible, our system of double-checking, triple-checking, and cross referencing with a “double entry” method of showing pedigrees from both sire and mare descents greatly reduces mistakes.  We warrant that we have gone through all pedigree charts page by page, horse by horse to correct errors and ensure accuracy.  Our goal is to provide customers with the best and most timely information possible.

SAMPLE PAGES

The first image below is the Northern Dancer – Lyphard Foals page coded as ND-LYP-1A. The second image below is the Fortino – Caro page FT-CAR-3A with a cross-reference from the ND- LYP-1A page for Miss Carina, mated to Bellypha to produce Mendez. That G-1 winner was sire of another G-1 winner Linamix and so forth. As can be seen, foals of sires are organized chronologically across the page and in rows, excepting that full siblings are for the most part kept together.
